Tamil To Tamil Navarasa - Nine Emotions: The Best and Worst Episodes of This Netflix Series

Netflix is back with a Tamil anthology drama that aims to portray navarasa, meaning nine different emotions. The two-minute trailer, launched on Tuesday, has gone on to gain over 1.4 million views in the span of a few hours.

The omnibus film, comprising nine stories depicting nine emotions, is actually a charity project. The unit of Navarasa has collaborated for a noble cause to help those who have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tamil To Tamil Navarasa - Nine Emotions

Though at most times there are more than one emotion in play, often it is one that takes control of our mind and soul and spurs us into action. Navarasa is a collection of nine stories born out of nine such emotions. Some of these pivot in a moment. Some take shape from deep rooted feelings. Navarasa showcases them all. We are extremely happy and proud of our colleagues in the industry, directors, actors and technicians, who have created engaging, exciting stories from these nine emotions or the classical rasas.

Navarasa, to be released on Netflix on August 6, involved a stellar line up of over 40 actors and several hundred technicians and support staff. The anthology features the nine human emotions of anger, compassion, courage, disgust, fear, laughter, love, peace and wonder. Prolific actors and directors like Gautham Vasudev Menon, Karthik Subbaraj, Suriya and Prakash Raj have all lent their services, but the female characters are the ones who subtly bring alive the visceral emotions in each of the nine films. "The characters are built in such a way that their arc defines the storyline," said Jayendra.

The first-of-its-kind Tamil anthology, Navarasa, which featured nine shorts, dealing with nine emotions was released on Netflix, which opened to mixed response from critics and audiences alike. The streaming platform has now released BTS video which is of almost 10-minute duration, which has all the nine directors and protagonists of each segments narrating their intriguing experiences. As the intention behind the project was the welfare of Kollywood crew members whose lives were hit badly by the pandemic, the video begins with Mani Ratnam, one of its producers, talking about how the whole idea was shaped up.

What fascinated Gautham was the idea of nine filmmakers making nine emotions. "Karthik knew what he wanted from me. He was very clear in his thoughts. For my short, I wanted it to do this with Suriya as I haven't seen him in that zone in a long time. I had a great learning experience working with PC sir again," he said.

Nine emotions, nine filmmakers, nine different unconnected stories and you have an expansive anthology showcasing some of the best Tamil talent. This does not, however, translate into the best showcase of Tamil writing, acting or content.

On Friday, Netflix unveiled the teaser of the much-awaited Tamil anthology, Navarasa. It is all set to feature nine stories by nine filmmakers. The teaser gave a sneak-peak of the nine emotions that will be explored in the mini-series.

The trailer of Netflix's Tamil anthology drama Navarasa has dropped. The clip, which is a little less than two minutes, doesn't give out much in terms of the plot. The dialogues in the trailer reflect the nine emotions that the anthology deals with.

The much-awaited nine-film anthology, helmed by Mani Ratnam and Jayendra Panchapakesan, is based on the nine rasas (emotions) - anger, compassion, courage, disgust, fear, laughter, love, peace and wonder.

Talking about the anthology, Mani Ratnam said, "Emotions may be momentary but some of those moments stay with us for life. Emotions are part of every day of our lives and yet some of these can change the course of our lives. This is what makes Navarasa interesting. Though at most times there is more than one emotion in play, often it is one that takes control of our mind and soul and spurs us into action. Navarasa is a collection of nine stories born out of nine such emotions. Some of these pivot in a moment. Some take shape from deep-rooted feelings. Navarasa showcases them all."

As the project is also intended to support film workers in Tamil cinema impacted by the pandemic, Jayendra Panchapakesan added, "We are extremely happy and proud of our colleagues in the industry, directors, actors and technicians, who have created engaging, exciting stories from these nine emotions or the classical 'rasas'. We are sure viewers across the globe will enjoy and celebrate this confluence of 'rasas'."

The toughest aspect of Navarasa, a nine-film, five-hour anthology that brings together some of the brightest names of Tamil cinema, isn't its length. It is the erratic and arbitrary manner in which the nine emotions of Indian dramaturgy have been translated to the screen. But to be fair, barring an exception or two, Navarasa, streaming on Netflix, makes a fair fist of delivering a range of cinematic moods and colour palettes, if not the intended spectrum of emotions.
